Steal a Brainrot Gear & Slaps — Costs and Unlocks
That last rule is the whole combat design. A thief carrying loot is defenceless, and a defender with a slap is not — which is why stealing is a timing problem rather than a fighting one, and why traps and control-inverting gear are worth more than raw knockback.

What to buy first
Before any rebirth, the three purchases that change outcomes are the Slap (longer reach than the Bat, same brainrot-return effect), the Speed Coil (+50% movement, which is what actually gets you to a spawning brainrot first) and Traps, which freeze a thief for seven seconds — long enough for your base lock to matter. You can only have five traps between the map and your inventory at once.
Rebirth-gated gear is a defence ladder
Each rebirth adds gear as well as multipliers, and the pattern is consistent: stronger slaps, better mobility, then disabling tools. By the time you are holding brainrots worth defending, you have the tools to defend them — which is another reason rebirthing early beats hoarding.
